What is hydrocele puncture actually?

Hydrocele puncture is a possible solution for hydrocele. It means aspirating fluid with a needle inserted into the hydrocele sac. The fluid is usually amber-colored, unless it is infected. During puncture, blood sometimes mixes with the amber fluid of the hydrocele and then it turns red. Hydrocele puncture is a temporary solution, because subsequently the hydrocele sac usually fills with fluid again within a few weeks to months.

However, it must be said that it is also a quick solution and at the same time minimally traumatic. Puncture often needs to be repeated, usually until we proceed to hydrocele surgery. Hydrocele surgery is the definitive solution to the problem. In some patients, for whom surgery is not possible for various reasons, we also perform puncture repeatedly, because it makes the patient’s life easier.

If you need to get rid of hydrocele quickly, without surgery it is a good solution for a few weeks to months. Puncture is not painful, takes a few minutes and after the outpatient procedure you can go home. Before the first puncture, we perform an ultrasound examination of the scrotal contents.

What are the advantages of hydrocele puncture?

Hydrocele puncture brings the patient immediate relief from the bothersome enlargement of the scrotum. It is a quick and simple procedure that does not require hospitalization and is performed on an outpatient basis. The patient thus does not have to undergo a more demanding surgical procedure and the result is practically immediate.

What are the risks of hydrocele puncture?

The risks of hydrocele puncture are minimal, but the procedure only solves the problem temporarily. The fluid may accumulate again after a few weeks to months and it will be necessary to repeat the procedure or later definitive surgical treatment. Rarely, mild swelling, bleeding or infection may occur at the puncture site.

How does hydrocele puncture work?

Hydrocele puncture is an outpatient procedure that takes place under local anesthesia. After disinfecting the puncture site, the doctor inserts a thin needle into the hydrocele sac and aspirates the excess fluid. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes and the patient can go home immediately after it.
