What is ProlapLase®?

Pelvic organ prolapse (cystocele, rectocele, vaginal prolapse) is a common disease affecting up to 50% of women who have given birth. In the past, we had only two treatment options available:

• Supportive vaginal pessaries
• Surgical treatment methods

Both of these treatment modalities are associated with various problems and adverse treatment effects. ProlapLase® is a new, innovative Er:YAG laser treatment non-invasive alternative for vaginal prolapse treatment. It uses a gentle, non-ablative photothermal effect of Fotona SMOOTH mode, which strengthens vaginal tissues and reinforces the vaginal canal. Published clinical studies have confirmed the method as effective, easily performable and safe.

How does ProlapLase® work and how is it performed?

ProlapLase® treatment is based on precisely controlled laser-induced photothermal effect of 2940 nm Er:YAG laser on vaginal tissues, which leads to synthesis of new collagen fibers. The result of collagen neogenesis and its remodeling is narrowing and strengthening of the vaginal canal without removal of any tissue.

As a result of strengthening and narrowing of the vagina, there is gradual relief to disappearance of prolapse (cystoceles, rectoceles), because the vagina regains its original supporting function in the integrity of pelvic floor organs. ProlapLase procedure is suitable for treatment of mild to moderate degree prolapse.

ProlapLase® protocol consists of 3 steps:

• step – Circular (360º) irradiation of the entire vaginal canal

• step – Angular irradiation of the prolapsed side of the vaginal wall (in case of rectocele posterior wall, in case of cystocele anterior wall)
• step – Irradiation of vestibulum vaginae and prolapsed vaginal wall. Usually 8-10 sessions are needed. Between individual sessions there are 4-8 week intervals.

Clinical study results presented by Dr. Ogrinc and Dr. Sencar proved that laser treatment is an effective, safe non-invasive option for vaginal prolapse treatment:

1. Prolapse degree was significantly reduced already after the first session.
2. Prolapse further improved after additional treatment sessions.
