Male sterilization (vasectomy) / Bratislava / Piešťany

During a vasectomy, only the vas deferens (sperm ducts) are interrupted. The rest of the scrotal contents remain untouched, and the testicles continue to produce both sperm and testosterone. The man maintains a normal sex life — the only difference is that the ejaculate no longer contains sperm.

Procedure characteristics

What exactly is vasectomy?

Vasectomy, or male sterilization, is permanent contraception for men. It is a procedure in which the vas deferens are cut. Contraception thus does not consist in preventing sperm production, but in cutting the vas deferens through which sperm cannot reach the ejaculate. The man thus becomes infertile.

What is life like after vasectomy?

After sterilization, we recommend patients avoid sports for several days and maintain increased hygiene in the incision area. Work capacity after vasectomy is not affected, and you can return to work the next day.

After the procedure, the patient comes for pre-arranged consultations where a spermogram is checked. After two spermograms with zero sperm count, sterilization is completed.

A sterilized man can continue his sexual life. The only difference is the production of ejaculate without sperm, which has 1/3 smaller volume. Erection and hormonal functions of the man are not affected by sterilization.

What is no-scalpel vasectomy?

The difference is in the procedure of performing vasectomy. In no-scalpel vasectomy, a scalpel is not used during the operation. Instead of a scalpel, a special instrument is used for easy access to the vas deferens.

The advantage of no-scalpel vasectomy is faster wound healing and a smaller wound.

Vasectomy at Lauros clinic

Performing vasectomy at our clinic is painless, outpatient and does not require subsequent sick leave. After performing vasectomy, a spermogram is checked 2 times. After 2 spermograms with zero sperm count, we can talk about completed male sterilization.

Is it possible to reverse permanent vasectomy?

After permanent vasectomy, it is possible to restore the vas deferens. However, this procedure is much more demanding than vasectomy and takes 90-120 minutes. Microsurgical vasectomy reversal costs 3500 euros.

Another option to have children even after permanent vasectomy is artificial insemination of the partner. Sperm is taken from the epididymis or directly from the testicle / MESA or TESA method /.

Most frequently asked questions in brief:

  • Will I lose ejaculate after vasectomy? NO
  • Is there a risk of pregnancy after vasectomy? After performing 2 tests with zero sperm count, natural pregnancy is no longer possible. In this case, artificial insemination is possible.
  • Can vasectomy cause erectile dysfunction or potency problems? NO
  • Does temporary vasectomy exist? Yes, but this procedure is risky and we do not perform it.
  • Is it possible to reverse vasectomy? Yes, but the procedure is demanding. If interested, contact us.
  • Can anyone undergo sterilization? Not everyone. A man over 18 years old without blood clotting disorders can undergo vasectomy. Of course, his health condition must allow it.
  • Does insurance cover vasectomy? NO, in most cases insurance will not cover vasectomy. If vasectomy needs to be performed due to health condition, insurance may cover it.
  • What is the price of vasectomy? At our clinic we perform no-scalpel vasectomy. The price of no-scalpel vasectomy is 700 €.

What problems does vasectomy solve?

Vasectomy is a permanent contraceptive method for men.

What are the benefits of vasectomy?

The advantages of male sterilization (vasectomy) are its simplicity, painlessness, the possibility of outpatient performance, and low financial costs compared to female hormonal contraception or barrier contraception.

What are the risks of vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a procedure that we perform under local anesthesia. This procedure usually proceeds without problems.

The risks of vasectomy include:

  • after the procedure, bleeding may occur that can discolor the ejaculate /rare/.
  • a blood clot may form at the incision site /rare/.
  • inflammation of the testicles or epididymis may occur /extremely rare/.

The procedure is not suitable for men who have a problem with blood clotting.

How does vasectomy proceed?

Male sterilization is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. A 5 mm incision is made in the upper half of the scrotum. After exposing the vas deferens, the urologist interrupts it to block the path of sperm from the testicles to the seminal vesicles. Both ends of the vas deferens are surgically closed and the entry incision is then sutured. We use absorbable material to close the wound, so suture removal is not necessary.

The operation takes approximately 20 min and hospitalization is not required after the procedure. The result of male sterilization is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate.

Who is vasectomy not intended for?

What is the course before vasectomy?

7 days before the procedure, after consulting with the doctor, it is necessary to discontinue or adjust the use of drugs that affect blood clotting. If you take any medicines, inform the doctor 7 days before the procedure.

The day before the procedure it is advisable to shave the hair on the scrotum and around the genitals.

What happens after vasectomy?

In the individual, the spermogram is checked 2 times and only after 2 spermograms with zero sperm count is it possible to talk about completed sterilization. The precise schedule of controls after vasectomy will be announced by your doctor at the initial consultation.

After the procedure, incapacity for work is not necessary. Analgesics are usually not required.

After the procedure, 2-3 days of physical rest, hygiene of the genital skin and the use of an antiseptic ointment on the surgical wound are appropriate. Skin stitches usually dissolve within 10-20 days after the procedure.
