More about the procedure
Procedure characteristics
What is undescended testicle surgery actually?
During intrauterine development, testicles are formed in the abdominal cavity and gradually descend through the inguinal canal into the scrotum. The scrotum is needed for proper development of male germ cells (sperm) because it provides the testicle with a temperature 4°C lower than body temperature. Cryptorchidism / undescended testicles into the scrotum / is among the most common congenital disorders of the male genitalia, affecting 0.8% of boys. It occurs more frequently in prematurely born children. The solution is undescended testicle surgery.
When should undescended testicle be operated?
Undescended testicle surgery is best performed between 12-18 months of the child’s life. But of course, if this congenital defect is discovered later, it should be operated later as well, to minimize the risk of improper development of the child’s testicle with possible damage to spermiogenesis and the risk of testicular tumor development.
What problems does undescended testicle surgery solve?
The procedure solves undescended testicle, non-palpable testicle in the scrotum in boys.
What are the advantages of undescended testicle surgery?
The surgery brings many benefits for the child’s physical and mental health. It reduces the risk of reduced fertility and testicular tumor development, which accompanies long-term leaving the testicle outside the scrotum. In addition, it allows the testicle to be placed in an anatomically natural position, which improves the possibility of self-examination in the future and minimizes trauma during physical contact (for example during sports). Thanks to this, the procedure has a positive impact not only on medical indicators, but also on the psychological state of the child and their parents.
What are the risks of undescended testicle surgery?
It is a developmental defect with higher risk of cancer in the affected testicle and higher risk of infertility.
There are several forms of this condition. The testicle may be located in the abdominal cavity and is not palpable during examination, or its descent may stop anywhere between the abdominal cavity and the scrotum. If it gets stuck in the groin or in the space above the scrotum, it is usually palpable. In case of anorchia, the testicle is completely missing due to damage during prenatal development.
How does undescended testicle surgery work?
In case of palpable undescended testicle, we perform orchiopexy surgery, the aim of which is to preserve the vitality of the testicle and place it in the scrotum. This can be done if the undescended testicle is vital, identifiable and has a sufficiently long vascular pedicle. Sometimes the testicle may be poorly developed or abnormal. In this case, it is better to remove the affected tissues from the organism. Silicone implants are used to remove aesthetic handicap and psychological block, which imitate the shape and size of the removed testicle. These are implanted only after puberty.
In some cases we palpate the testicle in the scrotum, but more often it is in the inguinal canal than in the scrotum. We call this condition testis mobilis. In this case and in case of conditions after testicular torsion, we indicate orchiofixation.
